Popular Beliefs, Myths, and Icons.
The topic I chose was how people love to put their whole lives on Facebook.  For example if someone has a baby as soon as the women goes into labor she puts her water broke and that she is going to the hospital.  Then as soon as she has the baby she puts pictures of her baby on Facebook.  People don't keep special moments to their selves anymore.
What theories seem to apply to your popular culture topic?
I feel the theories that apply to my pop culture topic would be icon and myths.

How do these theories describe, analyze or evaluate the topic you have selected?
I chose icon because these days a lot of people live their life around Facebook.  They are on it all the time on their phones and on their computers.  Many people are on Facebook at work, driving, while they are shopping, while they are in class, or just about anywhere else.  Many people love to hear the gossip or the stories about peoples lives.  Then I also chose myths because a lot of people go off what they hear from Facebook and a lot of it is wrong or they got the wrong information which messed the story all up.  You can never really honestly believe what you hear on Facebook is true until you actually talk to that person face-to-face.

What insights do you gain from applying these theories to your popular culture topic?
The insights I gain from applying these theories to my topic is don't believe what you hear off Facebook or don't put your whole life on Facebook.  Live your life off true life, don't live it off your computer screen.  Don't be on Facebook 24-7, actually pay attention to what is going on around you not just what is going on on Facebook.

Icon Analysis

Define the icons
The icons I chose are Zach off Saved by the Bell, the Orange County Real Housewives cast, and the T.V. show One Tree Hill.  All of these icons I chose are T.V. shows.  I do love T.V. and I know a lot of other people are the same way.  So I feel as if T.V. shows are very important with what happens in my and other peoples lives.  T.V. is in everyone's lives and I don't believe that will ever change.  You can now watch T.V. on your flat screen or you can even watch it on your laptop.

Briefly discuss why you chose the 3 icons
I am sure a lot of people will look at my images and will be like really she chose a Real Housewives T.V. show!?! I just love reality T.V.  and I like the drama and the way these ladies live their lives.  It is very interesting to me.  Zach off Saves by the Bell, was my number one show growing up.  I thinking everyone in the '90s watch that show.  Then my third was One Tree Hill, which all I can say is......I LOVE THIS SHOW!  It is the best show ever in my eyes.  I feel like this show is very true and all the things that happen in the show could happen in real life.
Discuss what those icons mean to you
The icons mean a lot of different things to me.  One Tree Hill keeps me thinking about different things I could do in my life.  For example: Brooke be a clothes designer or like Haley be a singer, mother, and a wife.  Zach off Saved By The Bell keeps me thinking about myself when I was younger and how my sisters and I just sat in front of the T.V. watching the show for hours when it was on. Then Real Housewives of Orange County just makes me think of different ways I could live my life.  I don't care about having tones of money and love watching these women who have tones of money fight over such little things.  I know I will never live my life as they do on the show.

Pop Culture Artifact:

Pop Culture
What is popular culture, and what does it mean to you?

  • Pop culture is defined as cultural activity that is based on popular taste.  It is what everyone does everyday.  People read the newspaper, magazines, watch TV, read Facebook, and just about everything else that is in the public eye. Everyone wants to know the dirt about just about everything.  We are human and we want to know the gossip or we want the newest phone that just came out.
Why is an understanding of popular culture relevant to you in a business environment and in your present and future career?
  •  I feel people have to know what is going on in the world.  People have to stay up on the news.  I am going to go into the Real Estate field and I have to know what house was just sold or what is going on with the big real estate agents or who just listed what.  People ask questions and you have to know the answer. You don't look good if you don't stay up on the newest gossip or news.

What would you consider to be an example of a pop culture artifact? And why would you choose it?
  • I chose the I Phone because I feel that everyone has to have the best and newest gadgets these days.  Yes, I am the sameway to BUT I feel like some people just take it to far.  I work at Subway and I have seen a lot of things happen just because peoples have their phones with them.  I have seen parents totally ignore their children just because they are looking at something on their phones or customers are ordering their subs and they are on the phone holding a conversation with the person on the line.  People have to check their e-mail, Facebook, or Twitter all the time.  I know their is a number out there somewhere saying how many times a person checks their Facebook a day and I am pretty sure it's pretty high just because they want to get gossip or the latest news about someone.
